Lighting is Key: Natural light is your best friend in portrait photography. Whether you're shooting indoors or outdoors, try to position your subject in soft, diffused light to avoid harsh shadows. Early morning or late afternoon light, the so-called "golden hour," often creates a flattering glow for portraits.
Play with Composition: Try different angles and compositions to add interest to your portraits. Instead of always placing your subject in the center of the frame, try off-center compositions or use leading lines to draw the viewer's attention toward your subject.
Connect with Your Subject: A great portrait captures the emotion and personality of the subject. Take the time to connect with your subjects and put them at ease through light conversation.
Focus on the Eyes: It's been said that the eyes are the window to the soul, so make sure they are sharp and in focus in your portraits. This will draw the viewer in and create a connection with the subject. So, avoid motion blur or camera shake, unless that's part of your artistic intent.
Keep it Simple: As in other areas of life, sometimes less is more when it comes to portrait photography.
